East Village, NYC: Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade Marks Its 36th Year

The 36th Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade took place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, in the East Village, bringing dogs and their owners together in costume for one of the neighborhood's best-known autumn traditions. This year's slogan was "So cute you'll scream."

The event is run by New York Dog Parade, which describes itself as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit and frames the day as a celebration of dog-human friendship. The pet food brand Kismet was among the sponsors listed on the organizer's site, alongside a long roster of other pet-related companies and animal welfare groups.

The schedule was straightforward. The parade stepped off at 11:00 a.m. on Avenue B, and spectators were told to arrive before then to claim a spot along Avenue B between 11th and 7th Streets. Registered participants received a scheduled arrival time by email, and check-in opened as early as 9:00 a.m.

Dogs that weren't registered were still invited to take part in the fun at the Dog Parade Festival Block on 6th Street between Avenues B and C. It was open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offered treats, photo opportunities and surprises.

The organizer also sold an official event T-shirt through an online apparel shop and enamel pins through a collaboration with Doheny, with sales supporting the parade. Because October is adopt-a-shelter-dog month, the site also promoted a "Rescue a Parade Buddy" feature and an "Adopt a Parade Buddy" section for shelter dogs.

For Japanese readers, the East Village is a lively downtown neighborhood, and a street parade devoted entirely to costumed dogs is a very New York way to mark Halloween season. The park itself sits at the center of the neighborhood.
