Candlelight: A Haunted Evening of Halloween Classics

The Church of the Heavenly Rest, the Episcopal landmark on Fifth Avenue in the Upper East Side, hosts a Halloween edition of the Candlelight concert series this month. The Highline String Quartet performs a roughly 60-minute program of horror and thriller themes, played among hundreds of candles in a building known for its blend of neo-Gothic and Art Deco design.

The tentative program ranges widely. Expect Michael Jackson's "Thriller," the "Tubular Bells" theme from The Exorcist, the prelude from Psycho, John Carpenter's Halloween theme, and the themes from Ghostbusters, The Addams Family, Beetlejuice and Stranger Things. Concert-hall staples sit alongside them: Saint-Saëns's "Danse Macabre," Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain," Schubert's "Der Erlkönig," Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King," and a medley from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Performances run Thursday, October 29 and Friday, October 30, at 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM; the October 30 early show is sold out. Tickets are $39.50 in Zone C, $46.50 in Zone B and $68.50 in Zone A, plus a booking fee, with seating first come, first served within each zone. The concert is for ages 8 and up, and anyone under 16 must come with an adult. Doors open 45 minutes before the show and close five minutes before it starts, with no late entry. The venue is ADA compliant, and souvenir seat cushions and a Candlelight plush mascot ($18) are available.
