From October 23, 2026 to January 24, 2027, The Drawing Center on Wooster Street in SoHo presents Form, Shadow, Motion, a show built from the Burger Collection in Hong Kong. It continues the Center's habit of mounting exhibitions drawn from notable private collections.

The Burgers hold more than 1,000 works on paper. Curator Olivia Shao, who serves as curator for both the Burger Collection and TOY Meets Art, has chosen about fifty of them. She assembles the selection as a visual essay on shared historical, poetic and philosophical concerns. Hong Kong and New York act as twin points of reference, and Eastern thought and Western philosophy serve as the guiding frameworks. The exhibition takes over the whole of the Drawing Center's gallery space.

Twenty-nine artists from around the world take part. Among them are Kai Althoff, Monika Baer, Fiona Banner, Robert Gober, Harmony Hammond, Alicja Kwade, Meret Oppenheim, Blinky Palermo, Anne Truitt, Franz West, Jack Whitten and Zarina. Hong Kong-based artists include Koon Wai Bong, Kong Chun Hei and Christine Ng Mien Yin. Birth years run from 1913 (Oppenheim) to 1993 (Shinoh Nam), so the group spans generations as well as regions.

Readers with a connection to Japan will find several names to look for. Tadanori Yokoo, born in Nishiwaki in 1936 and now living in Tokyo, and Hiroshi Sugito, born in 1970 and based in Nagoya, are both included. Isabella Séville Fürnkäs, born in Tokyo in 1988 and now living in Berlin, also appears.

Nine further artists are listed for the expanded version of the show, which travels to Asia Society, Hong Kong in 2027: Alvin Baltrop, Ranti Bam, Tozer Pak Sheung Chuen, Theaster Gates, Nick Mauss, Shirin Neshat, Qiu Shihua, Annie Lai Kuen Wan and Cao Yu. The catalog is co-published with Asia Society Hong Kong Center, and the exhibition is supported by the Drawing Center's Exhibition Fund.

A public opening reception takes place on Thursday, October 22, from 6 to 8 pm. The galleries are currently closed for installation ahead of the October 23 opening.
