Andrew Edlin Gallery in Tribeca is showing "Conduits of the Unseen: Women Artists Imagine Other Worlds" through October 31. The group exhibition gathers 17 artists, from the early 20th century onward, who gave visual form to alternate realities, spirits, cosmic forces and other planes of consciousness. They span eras, nations, economic backgrounds and belief systems, and their work ranges from landscapes and portraits to narrative scenes and pure abstraction.

The show is anchored by Paulina Peavy (1901–1999), who said her paintings, drawings and ornamented masks were channeled through a spirit guide called Lacamo. Her writings on esoteric metaphysics, works on paper and biomorphic paintings with energy beams are on view. The gallery published the first monograph on her, Laura Whitcomb's "Paulina Peavy: Etherian Channeler," in 2023.

Other names include Agatha Wojciechowsky, who held séances in New York and whose notebooks record a language she said came through spiritual contact; Agnes Pelton, represented by "The Being: A Transcendental Vision"; and Hilla Rebay, co-founder of the Guggenheim, with an abstract watercolor. Surrealists Leonora Carrington and Leonor Fini are also featured, with Carrington's unproduced 1970 play "Opus Siniestrus." Madge Gill and Emma Kunz are among the mediums included.

Susan L. Aberth, a professor at Bard College and author on Carrington and Surrealism, curated the show. The gallery is at 392 Broadway, 2nd Floor, open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm.
