Ippodo Gallery at 35 North Moore Street in Tribeca will open Strata: Seven Voices in Japanese Clay on December 17, 2026. The group exhibition runs through February 20, 2027, and gathers seven artists who work with clay in Japan.
The participants are Keiji Ito, Masahiro Maeda, Yukiya Izumita, Kodai Ujiie, Takaharu Minowa, Takaharu Hori and Junpei Hiraoka. They represent three generations, and their careers together cover more than six decades. That span is the organizing idea of the show: rather than presenting a single style or a single moment, it sets different stages of a living practice side by side.
The title is well chosen for a clay show. "Strata" suggests layers of earth, and here the layers are people and time, with older and younger artists sharing the same rooms. "Seven Voices" adds that each artist speaks in an individual way, so the exhibition reads as a conversation rather than a survey with one narrative.
Three of the seven, Takaharu Minowa, Takaharu Hori and Junpei Hiraoka, are making their debut at the New York gallery. Keiji Ito, Masahiro Maeda, Yukiya Izumita and Kodai Ujiie round out the group, so visitors will meet both established presences and new ones in one visit.
An opening reception takes place at the Tribeca gallery on Thursday, December 17, from 6 to 8 PM. Private viewings are also available by appointment. For readers in New York over the holidays, it is a chance to see a broad range of contemporary Japanese ceramics in a single downtown space.
