Schoelkopf Gallery's Thomas Hart Benton Show Closed in Tribeca, NYC, on October 16
Schoelkopf Gallery's "Thomas Hart Benton: A Picture of America in Its Entirety" ran September 9 to October 16, 2026. It gathered paintings and studies from 1925 to 1974 and was the gallery's first solo Benton show in New York in more than a decade.

"Thomas Hart Benton: A Picture of America in Its Entirety" ran at Schoelkopf Gallery from September 9 to October 16, 2026. It was the gallery's first solo Benton exhibition in New York in more than a decade, and it has now closed.
The checklist covered 1925 to 1974 and mixed finished paintings with studies, so a visitor could follow about five decades of the artist's work in one place. The earliest piece was Chilmark Landscape (1925), named for the town on Martha's Vineyard. The latest was a Self-Portrait from 1974.
Rural labor and everyday life made up much of the selection. The list included Edge of the Field (Cotton Pickers), dated 1943–61; Sugar Cane (1945); Spring (1944); Conversation (1952); and The Hymn Singer (c. 1950).
The American West was represented as well, by Trail Riders (c. 1964–65), The Desert (1956) and Wyoming Landscape (c. 1955–60). Two further works rounded out the checklist: a Study for "The Kentuckian" (1954) and a portrait of the painter Stanton Macdonald-Wright (1961–62).
Taken together, the works moved from Southern fields to Western terrain to an island coast, which matched the show's title. The studies sat beside the finished canvases, so the exhibition showed both the preparatory side and the completed side of Benton's practice.
The gallery is at 390 Broadway in Manhattan. The show is over, but the gallery's website keeps an archive page for the exhibition, with the full list of works, installation views and a press release.
