Odo East Village has opened on East 5th Street, bringing kaiseki-minded cooking to the neighborhood in the form of an izakaya. It comes from the team behind Odo in Flatiron.

The room is small and counter-style, with just under twenty seats. That scale puts diners close to the kitchen and suits a slow, dish-by-dish meal, whether you come as a pair or alone.

Two plates show the approach. One is a rice bowl of Hokkaido uni finished tamagotoji-style, with the sea urchin gently bound in egg. The other is braised Mishima Wagyu beef tongue, a long-cooked dish built on Japanese beef. Both pair the comfort of an izakaya with the careful technique associated with kaiseki.

The original Odo is led by Chef Hiroki Odo, who serves kaiseki built around seasonal ingredients and works with fishermen, butchers and farmers in Japan and on the East Coast. That restaurant sits in a speakeasy-style space behind the bar HALL at 17 West 20th Street. The East Village branch takes the same sensibility into a more casual izakaya setting, and the Odo website now features it as a new addition.

Odo East Village is at 536 E 5th St, in the heart of one of Manhattan's most Japanese-influenced dining neighborhoods.
