Lightness of Form: Terence Woodgate and John Barnard at Carpenters Workshop Gallery
British designer Terence Woodgate and Formula 1 engineer John Barnard present carbon fiber furniture at Carpenters Workshop Gallery on Fifth Avenue: a chaise longue, a wedge desk and a chair, shown for the first time in New York through October 18.

Carpenters Workshop Gallery's Fifth Avenue space in New York is showing Lightness of Form, a presentation of furniture by the British designer Terence Woodgate, developed in close dialogue with John Barnard, a pioneering Formula 1 engineer. It is the first time the works have been shown in New York, and the exhibition closes on October 18, 2026.\n\nThe selection is deliberately small: a chaise longue, a wedge desk and a carbon chair. Woodgate's practice has long centered on space, movement and minimalism, and here those concerns meet structural innovation. The gallery frames the show as a study in balance, where engineering and sculptural clarity are treated as one problem.\n\nThe Chaise Longue, dated 2025, turns the ergonomics of a reclining body into a single continuous line. Its form runs from one point to the next without visible joints or breaks, suggesting suspended movement and echoing both aerodynamic design and the contour of a figure at rest. Carbon fiber lets the structure flex slightly while holding its shape, balancing softness and support. It measures 72 x 183 x 64 cm (28.4 x 72 x 25.3 in) and comes in an edition of 8 plus 4 artist's proofs.\n\nThe Wedge Desk takes a more angular, architectural approach. A tapering volume appears to cut through space, setting mass against void. Its proportions are tuned to reduce bulk, so the piece keeps a sense of visual lightness despite its solid look. Carbon fiber allows crisp edges and refined surfaces, and the desk reads as both a workspace and an object for contemplation.\n\nAcross all the works, carbon fiber is both a showcase of technology and the means of achieving visual lightness and structural efficiency, moving between flexibility and rigidity. The show pairs Woodgate's conceptual clarity with Barnard's engineering precision, producing objects that sit between disciplines: functional yet sculptural, rigorous yet poetic.\n\nMaterial Intent: Color and Form runs concurrently at the gallery. The New York space is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm, and Saturday, 11am to 5pm, and closed on Sunday.
