Paweł Althamer: Artist/Studio at Anton Kern Gallery

Anton Kern Gallery will present "Artist/Studio," an exhibition by the Polish artist Paweł Althamer, from November 11, 2026 to January 16, 2027, at its space at 16 East 55th Street in Midtown East. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 10am to 6pm.

Althamer was born in Warsaw in 1967 and studied at the city's Academy of Fine Arts. He works across sculpture, video, performance and participatory projects, and relationships with other people sit at the center of his practice. He is known for projects that draw in whole communities, including his public sculpture work in Warsaw's Bródno district and the Common Task, in which participants dressed in gold suits traveled together to different parts of the world.

The title of the show, "Artist/Studio," joins two words at the heart of any art-making practice with a slash. In Althamer's work, the idea of a single author producing a finished object has often given way to a focus on place, process and the people around him. How the title speaks to that approach is something visitors will see in the gallery itself.

Anton Kern Gallery is led by the German-born dealer Anton Kern and is within walking distance of much of Midtown's museum and shopping district, which makes it an easy stop on a day around Fifth Avenue. Because the gallery is closed on weekends, a weekday visit is needed.

The gallery also runs WINDOW, a street-facing display space at 91 Walker Street, at the corner of Lafayette Street, which can be viewed around the clock from the sidewalk. Pairing the Midtown exhibition with a stop there gives a view of the gallery's program in both Midtown and downtown. Opportunities to see Althamer's work in New York are not frequent, so this winter show is worth putting on the calendar.
