Russ & Daughters, a 100-year-old bagel store in NYC
Russ & Daughters
Russ & Daughters is a long-established bagel shop in NYC that has been in business for over 100 years, starting in 1907 when Joel Russ moved to NYC from Poland and began selling marinated herring and smoked salmon on the Lower East Side. Joel had no sons and ran the store with his three daughters, hence the name &Daughters in the store name. The fact that the store has been in business for over 100 years in New York, a city that is in a constant state of change, is proof of its stable quality and continued popularity among the locals.
Russ & Daughters' main store is located on Manhattan's Lower East Side, and to celebrate its 100th anniversary, a café opened on Orchard Street, within walking distance. On weekends, there are long lines at both the main store and the café, sometimes standing in line for two hours or more. All Russ & Daughters bagels are made at the Navy Yard store in Brooklyn and shipped to Manhattan.
One of the hottest places, Brooklyn Navy Yard
Navy Yard is located halfway between Williamsburg and DUMBO and is a former shipyard of the U.S. Navy. Recently, the area has been experiencing rapid development, with a cluster of shared offices for startup companies and the opening of Wegmans, the No. 1 supermarket in the United States. Russ & Daughters' first Brooklyn store opened there, and it also has a factory.
The Navy Yard store has a large site and not as many people as in Manhattan, so there is almost no wait to buy. Russ & Daughters' famous ROX (smoked salmon), which Manhattan tourists love to eat even if they have to wait in line, is also available at the Navy Yard location, and you can enjoy it without waiting in line. If you arrive at the right time, just before closing time, they will even share their unsold bagels with you for free.
The Navy Yard has a shipyard history museum (BLDG92), a food court (BLDG77) with Russ & Daughters and a microbrewery, and a large supermarket (Wegmans), and a 30-minute walk will take you to Williamsburg and DUMBO. On a nice day, I recommend taking the ferry!
