David Zwirner · Chelsea
Thomas Ruff: jpegs ny
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 17
Twelve works from Thomas Ruff's jpegs ny series, begun in 2004, are on view. Ruff gathered internet images of the September 11, 2001 attacks and altered them through compression, reduced resolution and added color, then printed them at the scale of history paintings. Up close they dissolve into pixel grids; from a distance the scenes return. The artist conceived the show as a commemoration marking the attacks' twenty-fifth anniversary.

David Zwirner · Chelsea
Scott Kahn: Silent Night
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 17
David Zwirner's Chelsea gallery presents a focused look at Scott Kahn's landscapes, pairing new and recent oil paintings with works from the past twenty-five years. Recurring motifs, including moons, windows and winding paths, run through scenes drawn from childhood dreams and the artist's own backyard. The precisely rendered, quietly uncanny canvases show how Kahn treats landscape as a vehicle for mood. The show closes October 17.

Lévy Gorvy Dayan · Upper East Side
Inma Barrero: MOTHERS
Closing soon · Sep 17 – Oct 17
Inma Barrero's first show at Lévy Gorvy Dayan presents eight large sculptures, all shown for the first time. Each is built from hundreds of handmade ceramic beads strung on metal wire and evokes a maternal figure drawn from prehistoric, ancient and modern cultures. The beads draw on rosaries, worry beads and Buddhist prayer beads, and the clay includes soils from Japan, Mexico and Spain. It closes October 17.

Canada · Tribeca
Ideas (cont.)
Closing soon · Sep 9 – Oct 17
Scott Reeder's second solo show at CANADA brings together new paintings in several modes: portraits of dogs and skeletons doing human things, handwritten list paintings, and abstractions built from collaged studio drawings and acrylic splatter. The works nod to Matisse and Bonnard while asking, with dry humor, whether ideas belong in visual art at all. On view through October 17.

Canada · Tribeca
Slurpee Machine
Closing soon · Sep 9 – Oct 17
Tyson Reeder shows paintings and note-card drawings in CANADA's project room. His candy-bright, fluid scenes suggest cabarets, parties and imagined places, built with unconventional materials such as glitter, nail polish, marker and collage. The gallery ties the work to his constant drawing habit, and the drawings are sold at the gallery for cash. On view through October 17.

Ippodo Gallery · Tribeca
Kaori Someya: The Light Within
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 17Japan
Tokyo-based Nihonga painter Kaori Someya, born in Shimane, makes her first solo show at Ippodo Gallery in TriBeCa. Using urahaku, she places metal leaf behind thin washi so a soft glow rises through mineral pigments around kimono-clad women. The show includes more than a dozen recent works, partly made during a Brooklyn residency, plus folding screens that draw on Rimpa masterpieces. It runs through October 17.

Friedman Benda · Chelsea
Wendell Castle: Living
Closing soon · Sep 17 – Oct 17
This exhibition reconstructs the home of sculptor and furniture maker Wendell Castle and ceramist Nancy Jurs, using a 1973 House Beautiful feature on their Scottsville, New York, house as its starting point. Curated by their daughter Alison Castle, it includes family-lent works not shown publicly since, arranged to suggest kitchen, bedroom, living and dining spaces, so the furniture can be seen as it was meant to be used.

Whitney Museum of American Art · West Village
Andy Warhol Family Album
Closing soon · Apr 30 – Oct 19
This small display draws on one of Andy Warhol's six personal albums of Polaroids, made in 1972–73 and nicknamed his "family album." Posed portraits, snapshots of visitors at his Montauk home, travel pictures from Europe and photos of his dog Archie show how he treated daily life as material. It closes October 19 on Floor 7.
Almine Rech · Tribeca
Zio Ziegler — The Tesseract
Closing soon · Sep 16 – Oct 21
Zio Ziegler's fourth solo show at Almine Rech moves between four modes: dense, pattern-filled paintings, stripped-down monochrome canvases, his "Essential Figures," and bronze sculptures. Drawing on Ovid, Gilgamesh and the Bible, the works explore expulsion and transformation, and ask what remains distinctly human in the age of AI. On view through October 21.
Almine Rech · Tribeca
Special Focus on Taryn Simon — On the occasion of her exhibition at the Guggenheim
Closing soon · Sep 16 – Oct 21
Timed to Taryn Simon's solo show at the Guggenheim, Almine Rech New York presents a group of works from her recent series Executive Orders. The photographs examine presidential orders, which let a US president change policy without legislation, by picturing related objects such as the White House pen. Simon treats these items as a kind of archaeology of the present. On view through October 21.
The Future Perfect · NoHo
Use Me, I'm Fragile
Closing soon · Sep 16 – Oct 23Japan

About 25 artists and studios contribute lighting, furniture, vases, mirrors and sculptural pieces that sit between design and art. The exhibition frames fragility as a condition that calls for care rather than a weakness. It runs through October 23.

The exhibition looks at how photography treats staged, artificial nature, and it runs at the gallery's West 24th Street space until October 24.

Nara Roesler · Chinatown
The Ultimate Works
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 24Japan
This show looks at the last works of Tomie Ohtake, the Kyoto-born artist who settled in Brazil. Thick white paintings and looping white tubular-steel sculptures hang alongside her early "blind paintings" made while blindfolded in the 1960s. Curated by Luis Pérez-Oramas, it follows a thread from darkness to white and treats her career as a long inquiry into the limits of perception.

The Noguchi Museum · Long Island City
Light and Stone: Revisiting Noguchi's 1986 Venice Biennale
On view · May 6 – May 9Japan
In 1986 Isamu Noguchi became the first solo artist to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale. Names include Hopper, Warhol, Basquiat, Kusama and Noguchi.
