Luhring Augustine · Chelsea
settle for a good fantasy
Closing soon · Sep 11 – Oct 24
Four photographers, Janice Guy, Joe Mama-Nitzberg, Shaun Pierson and the late David Seidner, approach portraiture through patchwork rather than idealization. Each builds a subject from disparate fragments that deliberately don't fit together neatly, leaving room for ambiguity and questions. The works range from Guy's 1970s self-portrait sequences to new 2026 prints and Seidner's fashion-era images. It is the first Luhring Augustine show for three of the four artists. On view through October 24.

Sean Kelly · Hell's Kitchen
When the Center Holds
On view · Sep 11 – Oct 31
Nigerian-born, Chicago-based painter Luke Agada makes his first solo show at Sean Kelly with new paintings and drawings. Taking a cue from Yeats's "the center will not hold," he treats the center as a negotiated space where memory and belonging persist through displacement. Dreamlike figures, fragmented architecture and biomorphic forms suggest identity is continually assembled rather than inherited. On view through October 31.

Sean Kelly · Hell's Kitchen
Solid Light, 1973, 2020, 2026
On view · Sep 11 – Oct 31
Anthony McCall's seventh solo show at Sean Kelly gathers three "solid light" works made across five decades. Line Describing a Cone (1973) is a 30-minute projection in which a slowly drawn circle builds a cone of light in a hazy room. Skylight (2020) pairs a vertical beam with a David Grubbs score evoking a passing storm. Swarm (2026), debuting here, uses two counter-rotating light cones and sound inspired by drones. Visitors walk through the beams themselves.

David Zwirner · Chelsea
Thomas Ruff: jpegs ny
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 17
Twelve works from Thomas Ruff's jpegs ny series, begun in 2004, are on view. Ruff gathered internet images of the September 11, 2001 attacks and altered them through compression, reduced resolution and added color, then printed them at the scale of history paintings. Up close they dissolve into pixel grids; from a distance the scenes return. The artist conceived the show as a commemoration marking the attacks' twenty-fifth anniversary.

David Zwirner · Chelsea
Scott Kahn: Silent Night
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 17
David Zwirner's Chelsea gallery presents a focused look at Scott Kahn's landscapes, pairing new and recent oil paintings with works from the past twenty-five years. Recurring motifs, including moons, windows and winding paths, run through scenes drawn from childhood dreams and the artist's own backyard. The precisely rendered, quietly uncanny canvases show how Kahn treats landscape as a vehicle for mood. The show closes October 17.

David Zwirner · Chelsea
Nate Lowman: Hanging Out
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 24
Nate Lowman (b. 1979) shows a new series of canvases cut into the shape of keys, a motif he has not used before. Keys suggest access and exclusion, but also copying and slow alteration, themes that run through his work with found images. Some paintings draw on his own photographs and graffiti; others borrow hardware-store finishes. Hung together, the works shift between abstraction and figuration, public meaning and private memory in New York.

Lehmann Maupin · Chelsea
Rana Begum
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 24
Rana Begum, born in Bangladesh and based in London, has her first New York solo show at Lehmann Maupin. Her sculptures and wall works use light as both subject and material, shifting with the viewer's position. The presentation includes the Louvre series, inspired by architectural louvres, and a hanging installation of red and blue chain-link fencing. Geometric abstraction and Islamic patterns inform the work.

Paula Cooper Gallery · Chelsea
Zephyr, Zephyr
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 24
Tauba Auerbach's new show at Paula Cooper's 521 West 21st Street space centers on pointillist paintings of liquid foam seen through a microscope, built from hand-painted dots on sprayed panels that sit slightly off the wall and focus on how foam handles light. You Red The Shirt Off My Back
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 24
Eric N. Mack, who makes abstract paintings from textiles and garments, returns to Paula Cooper Gallery for his second show there. He cuts, dyes, sews and pins fabric, then pairs it with custom stainless-steel armatures. Freestanding and wall-based works sit alongside a site-responsive installation, with sheer mesh and printed cloth hanging from the ceiling to steer visitors' movement. It's an opportunity to see painting stretched into the room. Through October 24.

Casey Kaplan · Chelsea
Cold Meat, Cake, and a Variety of All the Finest Fruits in Season
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 24
Matthew Ronay's fourth solo show at Casey Kaplan gathers more than thirty basswood sculptures on artist-made plinths, arranged as a series of tableaux. He frames making and exhibiting as a kind of digestion, absorbing references that range from funerary arts to imagined machines and architecture. The plinths riff on a misremembered fireplace at Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House, and the winding layout denies a straight path, pushing visitors to circle the work and look slowly. Through October 24.
Casey Kaplan · Chelsea
Gardens in Orbit
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 24
Chilean-rooted artist Johanna Unzueta presents her second solo show at Casey Kaplan, centered on drawing. Twelve graphite and pastel works circle the gallery walls on hinges, so they can be repositioned. On the floor stand four double-sided paper works dyed with indigo, turmeric and berries, pierced and cut to let light through. Woven elements wrap the columns, and recurring circular forms treat nature as cyclical. Through October 24.

Norr Cohan · Tribeca
Savdie / Soutine
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 24
Norr Cohan pairs paintings by Chaïm Soutine (1893–1943) with new work by Brooklyn-based Ilana Savdie (b. 1986), artists separated by about a century. The gallery frames both as painters for whom unstable bodies and shifting form drive the work, using saturated color, broken contour and deliberate distortion to favor sensation over likeness. The show is presented as the first time their work has been seen together. It runs through October 24.

It runs through October 24.

Tina Kim Gallery · Chelsea
Double Vision

It runs through October 24.

Nara Roesler · Chinatown
The Ultimate Works
Closing soon · Sep 10 – Oct 24Japan
This show looks at the last works of Tomie Ohtake, the Kyoto-born artist who settled in Brazil. Thick white paintings and looping white tubular-steel sculptures hang alongside her early "blind paintings" made while blindfolded in the 1960s. Curated by Luis Pérez-Oramas, it follows a thread from darkness to white and treats her career as a long inquiry into the limits of perception.

Tanya Bonakdar Gallery · Chelsea
Sandra Vásquez de la Horra: Reading the Waves
On view · Sep 10 – Oct 29
Chilean-born, Berlin-based artist Sandra Vásquez de la Horra has her first show at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery. Her drawings, dipped in beeswax so the paper stays translucent, are arranged as a chapel-like circle downstairs and as a suspended accordion-fold piece upstairs. The show approaches time and memory through surface. Open weekdays, 11am to 6pm.

Line Call is Eileen Quinlan's eighth solo show at Miguel Abreu Gallery. It gathers photographs from the past twenty years, pairing unaltered, newly shown snapshots of friends, family and private spaces with her heavily processed digital pieces and recent prints on mirror. Jack Shainman Gallery · Chelsea
Becky Suss: Night House
On view · Sep 10 – Oct 31
Philadelphia painter Becky Suss turns to nighttime in this new body of work, showing figureless interiors rendered in blacks, greys and deep blues. Scott Reeder's second solo show at CANADA brings together new paintings in several modes: portraits of dogs and skeletons doing human things, handwritten list paintings, and abstractions built from collaged studio drawings and acrylic splatter. Canada · Tribeca
Slurpee Machine
Closing soon · Sep 9 – Oct 17
Tyson Reeder shows paintings and note-card drawings in CANADA's project room. His candy-bright, fluid scenes suggest cabarets, parties and imagined places, built with unconventional materials such as glitter, nail polish, marker and collage. The gallery ties the work to his constant drawing habit, and the drawings are sold at the gallery for cash. On view through October 17.

Bortolami · Tribeca
Yuan Yuan
Closing soon · Sep 9 – Oct 24
Yuan Yuan makes his first U.S. solo appearance with new paintings at Bortolami's upstairs space. Working wet-on-wet, he layers manmade landscapes, water, and sea creatures with scenes from Asian cities and echoes of Western art history. Fine detail meets loose, gestural strokes, and the surfaces appear almost fluid, so forms emerge and dissolve as you approach. The show dwells on memory, place, and time slipping out of focus.

Anton Kern Gallery · Chinatown

Both lean on light, reflection and geometry, but toward different ends. Kasten's early-1980s Construct photographs hang alongside Buren's recent prism-and-mirror reliefs. Note: the page lists both Oct 24 and Oct 31 as closing dates.

The portraits that follow are loose and unfinished by design. On view through October 31.

Anton Kern Gallery · Midtown East
Marcus Jahmal: Booty

Piles of Swarovski crystals on the floor echo the title's double meaning of plunder and bodily desire. On view through October 31.

Kapwani Kiwanga's site-specific commission fills the Studio Museum's second-floor project gallery. Taking the "flying geese" quilt pattern, said to have signaled routes along the Underground Railroad, she recreates it in undulating black, blue and red textiles. The dyes come from Atlantic seawater, pokeberries and indigo, each tied to histories of slavery and trade. Because the colors are fugitive, they will shift over time. On view through April 1, 2027.

Starting from early photography and black-and-white practice, it asks how light and shadow can build form and rhythm.

The works range from a cast-metal dining table and an onyx low table to copper-knitted chandeliers, marble carved as drapery, upholstered pieces and Alpi plywood objects. Improvisation meets serious craft, offering a look at how far one artist's own logic can travel.
